Description
What is a ridge?
In roofing, the ridge of a roof is the peak where two opposing roof planes meet. This can also be referred to as the highest point on a roof where two roof areas intersect. Therefore, A roof “ridge” is created by the junction of two roof slopes facing opposite directions. A traditional pitched roof on a home is made up of two sloped sides that meet in the middle. The point where these two sides meet forms the apex of the roof and are known as the ridge or ridge line.
What is a ridge cap?
A ridge cap is a building material that is installed along the ridge line of a sloped roof. A ridge cap fits over the joint between these two edges to keep rain and snow out of the home. It also helps to finish off the look of the roof by creating a tightly sealed joint along the two sides. This is a special shingle that is designed for the harsh wind that hits the ridge of a roof. A ridge cap will not only be thicker than a regular shingle, but they are also pre-bent.
Do I need a ridge cap?
If you have a metal roof, you’ll need a roofing closure installed between the roof panels (ridge). The ridge cap offers extra protection against dirt, debris, and water. For unique roof designs and sizes, it’s possible to cut regular shingles to create special ridge caps. If you want to save time and money, though, it’s best to go with a prefabricated ridge cap.
Since the roof ridge is the most exposed to sun, wind, and harsh weather conditions, it gets damaged much more quickly than other roofing elements. Thus, it’s important to regularly check if your ridge caps and shingles need replacing. Additionally, It’s best to make sure that you buy high-quality materials and that everything is installed properly, so you don’t encounter more serious problems in the future.
It might cost more upfront, but you’ll also be saving on potential repairs and maintenance in the future.
